Pool resurfacing or pool refinishing is a process of removing and replacing the existing top finish of your pool. After refinishing the pool, a new sealant is applied. You can think of it as giving your pool’s surface a facelift to improve its aesthetics and lifespan.
It’s different from pool replastering because this involves the complete removal and replacement of the bottom plaster layer. Your choice between the two services depends on the signs of aging that manifest. Pool resurfacing is also cost-effective and requires less time.
Benefits of Renovating Your Existing Pool
So far, we’ve alluded to some benefits of pool renovation/ resurfacing, including improved appearance and lifespan. Other benefits of pool refinishing include:
Increased Safety
Pool resurfacing improves pool safety by fixing leaks and cracks and creating a smooth, non-slip surface.
Improved functionality
We can enhance the functionality of your pool by reducing the amount of water it loses, improving its water flow, and improving energy efficiency.
Signs You Pool Needs a Resurfacing
The signs that your pool needs resurfacing vary depending on the finishing material used. That said, some general warning signs to look out for include the following:
- Stains develop on the surface of your pool. While the stains are normal and can be cleaned, if they are too common, your pool needs resurfacing.
- Discoloration on the surface of your pool. Unlike stains, discolorations aren’t cleaned easily, and they tend to be more permanent.
- Peeling and flaking developing on the pool’s surface
- Cracks on the pool’s surface
- Losing pebbles over time and other issues on the surface
When you see any of these signs individually, it may not be a sign you need pool resurfacing. But when you see a combination of any of the signs, you should proceed with pool resurfacing.
THE PROCEDURE
How Does it Work?
Although the mechanics of pool resurfacing vary depending on the pool environment you’re working on, there are several common steps that always occur. These include:
Pool Draining
Before you start your resurfacing project, you’ll need to drain the pool. We always check with the local government to know what’s acceptable and what’s not and obtain a permit.
Preparing the Surface
Next comes surface preparation. Your pool may have dirt, debris, rust, and discoloration that need to be removed. During this stage, minor cracks are fixed. This process is done using a wire brush. If there’s plaster on the gunite, we use a jackhammer, pick, or chisel to get the plaster off the shell.
Priming
We then progress with priming the surface. This process is similar to priming a wall inside the home. The whole pool’s surface should be primed and allowed to dry before we complete the resurfacing. The priming is done using trisodium phosphate. We also use muriatic acid to get rid of mineral deposits.
Finishing
Once the pool is clean and primed, we will resurface it with plaster. A 100 linear foot pool will require 2,500 pounds of plaster and 3,500 white marble plaster sand.
Pool Refilling
When the final resurfacing is done and the material has dried, we’ll refill the pool. Once we refill the pool, you’ll see the fresh look that is created. The project will be worth it.
Common Pool Surfaces Used in Florida
The most common pool surfaces used in our sunny state, is:
Plaster
Gunite pools are coated with a special pool plaster. It’s a mix of limestone or marble sand and cement. It’s by far the least expensive surfacing material and lasts for seven years with good maintenance.
Pebble
As a pool surface, pebble finishes are simply plaster with aggregate. Adding aggregate makes the surface more durable and resistant to white stain than just plaster. Although the pebble finish is rougher and more expensive than plaster, it lasts nearly twice as long (about 12 years with proper maintenance).
Quartz
Quartz-finished pools have plaster mixed with quartz aggregate. The mixture has more color compared to pebble finishes. Quartz is also more stain-resistant than pebble, lasting between 12 and 15 years.
Fiber Glass
Fiberglass pools should only be redone with fiberglass. We use special kits that contain white fiberglass coupled with a gel coat to restore the finish to your pool. It’s a complicated resurfacing process, and we do not recommend you try it as a DIY project.
Should I DIY?

You can resurface your pool any time of the year. However, most people usually prefer to have it done in the fall because the pool is used less frequently than in summer. This reduces inconveniences during the resurfacing project. Also, in fall, the weather is more favorable as the temperatures are cooler and there’s less rain.
